How to Identify Skimming Devices on ATM’s
How to Identify Skimming Devices on ATM’s, Gas Pumps, and more!
Skimming devices have recently been reported in and around the Birmingham Area. Below are a few examples of how you can identify these type of devices and a few ways to protect your card information from potentially being compromised. Skimming devices come in all shapes and sizes and can be placed on ATM’s, gas pumps, and retail stores.
How can you help to stop criminals from potentially stealing your card data:
- Before entering your card pull on the card reader and make sure it is permanently attached and is not easily removed.
- Cover your hand as you enter your PIN in case a camera has been placed on the machine to capture your PIN. Your card data is less valuable to the criminal without your PIN.
- If using a gas pump try to use the pumps closest to the attendants. Skimmers are usually placed on the pumps that are the farthest from the store. Also, some pumps are now including security tap on the pump like the pictures below. If you notice the security tape voided or broken report to the attendant immediately.
- Always check your statements for unauthorized activity.
